How to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated!

Do you ever feel like you are pulling teeth in order to sustain your drive through a task, a project, or even a career and no amount of coffee is going to help?

We have all been there! Yes, motivation comes and goes but if you are finding yourself in a demotivated period… This blog is for you. Career Coach Amelia can help you reignite your motivation. Find how here.

Let’s start from the beginning. What is motivation?

Motivation is the drive to achieve your goals or needs. It acts as a central point for creativity, productivity and happiness. Motivation has a ripple effect on how we act and when we act. Motivation gives your life purpose and happiness. It is also influenced by:

  • How much do you want the goal

  • What you will gain

  • Your personal expectations

Essentially, motivation is fundamental to life. As it provides you with goals to work towards, helps you solve problems, helps you change old habits, and helps you cope with challenges and opportunities. If you think about it, if none of us had motivation we’d all be lying in bed all day watching movies!

How do we become unmotivated in the first place?

There are two types of demotivation, lack of motivation is the problem or lack of motivation is a symptom of a bigger problem.

If lack of motivation is the problem, you probably spend a lot of time procrastinating. And the more you procrastinate, the less motivated you feel. Improving your motivation to get work done can help you feel better and perform better.

A lack of motivation may show up as a symptom of perfectionism. Your demotivation stems from the fear of not completing a task flawlessly. So until you work on your need to be perfect, your motivation isn’t likely to increase. Amelia, a professional careers coach, can work with you to navigate the cause of your perfectionism and how you can combat it. Contact Amelia here.

These are a few other common reasons why people sometimes lack motivation. You might find that your lack of motivation stems from other issues, like the fear of what people think or a desire to please everyone. Working with a careers counsellor or career coach can help you get to the bottom of why you might have trouble motivating yourself.

You avoid uncomfortable feelings

Have you ever avoided doing a task in order to dodge feeling frustrated or challenged? Or have you put off a mundane task because it’s boring? Sometimes a lack of motivation stems from a desire to avoid uncomfortable feelings.

Self-doubt

Self-doubt can prove to be a huge motivation killer. When you think you can’t do something and don’t believe in yourself, you’ll likely struggle to get started and your motivation levels will slowly decrease.

Saying “Yes” to everything!

We are all guilty of this. You say yes to everything and in turn, leaves you feeling overwhelmed and this zaps your motivation.

As a career Coach, Amelia will help to facilitate self-awareness and empowerment within you to shift your motivation level. Find out how by contacting Amelia here.

So you are unmotivated, How do you become (and stay) motivated?

1. Set achievable goals

Setting goals gives you a direction to focus on and an endpoint to work towards. This can help you to stay motivated.

Be mindful that you set goals that are achievable and that you are interested in, otherwise you will end up becoming unmotivated by them. Find out more on how to set realistic, achievable goals here.

2. Break your goals or tasks into smaller, easy to tackle goals.

Start with easier tasks and work your way up to bigger challenges. Breaking up a task in your mind into achievable chunks helps build confidence.

3. Find things that interest you within goals that don’t

Not all goals or tasks are going to be interesting and exciting. To find a positive in the not so fun goals.

4. Reward yourself

Reward yourself each time you complete a step/task. Rewards can come in many forms, such as; getting your nails done, enjoying a sleep-in or buying your favourite takeaway.

5. Find your personal cheerleader

Join a class, or find a teacher or someone you can share the experience with.  Melbourne career coach Amelia can become your personal cheerleader, boosting your motivation and giving you encouragement to continue smashing your goals. Find out how you can work with Amelia here
